Hearing loss caused by exposure to noise at work continues to be a significant occupational disease. Research estimates that 170,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, tinnitus or other ear conditions as a result of exposure to excessive noise at work. It is estimated that around 2 million workers are at risk from noise hazards in this country alone. Hearing loss caused by noise is irreversible, so prevention isn't just better than cure it's the only real alternative.
Employers are required to ensure that the risk of damage to the hearing of employees, from exposure to noise, is at the lowest level possible. WBV occurs when a persons body is supported on a vibrating surface. For example, the seat of a moving vehicle or when operating vibrating machines. Exposure to high levels of WBV can be extremely uncomfortable and unpleasant, but it can also cause and aggravate back pain.

Exposure to hand-arm vibration over many years can lead to reduced grip strength and numbness and temperature sensitivity may persist between attacks. Figures estimate that there are in the region of 300,000 employees currently suffering from advanced stages of vibration white finger (VWF). As a result VWF is currently one of the most common reasons for occupational ill health claims made against employers. Environmental Essentials UK have the resources to assess potential noise output from your facility to provide an indication of whether you will need appropriate environmental permits (in line with the Environment Agency Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) regulations). Background noise levels at the nearest noise sensitive locations will be compared with that during plant activity to assess the likelihood of resident complaints and allow evaluation under the relevant legislation.
